The Sofa Kings
Martyn Gault

Hi! my name is Martyn Gault,
I was born in Auckland, New Zealand.
I'm 47 years old, My family moved to Australia when I was about one and a half years old and we lived in New South Wales until I was 14. Then we moved to tasmania.

I started playng guitar when I was nine, and Mum and dad bought me my first electric guitar when I was ten, (I still have it). Its a thing of beauty, a pre-Fender CBS double cutaway electric, Fire engine red, with two single coil pickups and a bigsby bridge. Yeah baby!

My favourite bands are : Led Zeppelin : The Beatles : Pink Floyd : The Angels : AC/DC : Australian Crawl : Nirvana : and my favourite at the moment ... The Vines (check them out, they rock)

I stared playing in bands during the 80's;
The first band that actually played anywhere, was called the pirates,
the lead guitarist was a guy named Ray Parsons. He used a Kramer guitar through a Marshall 100 watt with two quad boxes.. We played heavy stuff, and were in my opinion, the loudest non-natural noise in the solar system...... My ears are still ringing.

I also played in a country and western band for one night called Delta. The experience has left me scared for life. Even now, when I hear "Running Bear" I curl up in the foetal position!

Somewhere about 1985 I joined the Tall Trees with me playing bass, and the legendary Frank Jewson on guitar, and vocals, and Damian "lightning" Bushby on Drums.

Frank and I played in Tall Trees for about fifteen years together with various musicians such as:
Dave Witt (Drums), Glen Strickland (saxophone and keyboards), and John Munday (Guitar).
The Tall Trees sound was once described as "Jimmy Hendrix meets Pink Floyd, with some whale noises thrown in".
We played everything from "Muddy Waters" to "The Stooges", and we played in the pubs all over Tasmania.

Frank Jewson, Dave Witt and I were joined by Don Gadd in about 2000 in a band called "The Northern Lights" and then "The Garter Snakes" which played for about three years or so, at venues including the Fourth Valley Blues Festival in 2002.

For about five years I had a rest from music, that was until I met Doug and Nigel at Paul's New Year's Eve party two years ago, and we foud that we just "fit" musically and so here we are.

Ridin that damned Sofa.... yippy kye aye!

I’ve always loved music. In highschool I started on the trumpet,
it wasn’t until I picked up a guitar because my mates were playing it that my interest in music really clicked.
