Don't you just love it when sometimes a seemingly innocous little gig just stands up , and smacks you in the head, and sends you home with a big smile on your face? Well folks, thats exactly what happened at The Sofa Kings gig at the Oak last month.
Despite what the band name implies, these boys have been anything but lounging around on the couch. What started off as a bit of a jam-band idea has developed into much more than that, and they managed to treat a very sizeable crowd to a great night's entertainment, and that is what live music is all about. After a slightly nervous start and a it of dial tweaking the band really warmed to the task.Front man Nigel (I Really do own a Gretsch) led the band through 4 well worked sets, with the tight as you like rhythm section of Martin And Doug right there with him.Paul (I can sing can't i ) added the finishing touches with some smooth and blazing harp work and back-up vocals. Now come on be honest, who among you when the mood is right haven't sung along, at least in your head,to classics like Green River,Sultans of Swing,Sweet Home Chicago,Route 66,Hey Joe,Walking the Dog,Stuck in the middle with you and so on. throw in a couple of throw in a couple of lesser known favourites of mine ,the Georgia Satellites' classic keep your hands to yourself, and Gary Moore Walkin by myself and the kings really had the place jumping".Stray Cat Strut even had a couple of old rockers, who shall remain nameless,up on the floor trying to remember how to do the "Stut". So come on Gloria and Long Tall Sally, put your high heel sneakers on,because we're goin' out tonight before The Thrill Is Gone, but Keep Your Hands to Yourself or i might finsh up in Intensive Care because i won't Back Down, but that's What Like About You.Oh, and we're going to a Sofa Kings gig |
